Purpose of the Governing Body

Governing Body Terms of Reference

The Governing Body (GB) provides strategic management, acts as a critical friend and strives to ensure that the school is accountable for its actions.

  • The GB will work together with the head teacher to set the future direction for the school and decide how the school's budget should be spent.
  • The GB will make decisions collectively on matters such as performance targets, school policies and the school's improvement plan.
  • The GB will review progress against the school's budget and objectives and monitor the impact that the school's policies have on pupil outcomes.
  • The GB will report to parents on the school's achievements and respond to inspection recommendations. It will hear appeals from pupils and staff and consider complaints.
  • The GB will appoint, challenge and support the head teacher, drawing on their knowledge and experience.
  • The GB will make its decisions based on the advice of committees that deal with specific issues, such as the school's finance.
